Similarities

These days I've been hearing more and more how much we look alike. Up until now, people always said you look exactly like Daddy (with an emphasis on exactly.) So, needless to say, I'm reveling in every moment someone says you look like me. It's been a treat. Now, don't get me wrong, you still look like Daddy, but at 15 months you seem to be more of a combo of the two of us.

Zave "The Pi" VanderBeek: 2006 - 2009

Yesterday we had to say goodbye to the cuddliest and lovingest member of our family, Zave.

Zave's kidneys were flawed upon arrival, and they finally ran out of steam, failing completely.

She was our baby before we had a baby, and was certainly more family member than pet.

When I was up late at night feeding you, Zave always kept me company. And there was nothing that made you happier than seeing Zave first thing in the morning when you woke up.

There is a gaping Zave-shaped hole whenever I am at home, especially in the mornings or when I come home to an empty house.

I'm honestly shocked at how much I miss The Pi. Thanks to Zave for 3 amazing years and to Jennifer for allowing her to join our family.

Jayme's Wedding

Last night Jayme and Eric got married in a lovely ceremony in Long Beach.

The highlight was obviously seeing Eric make an honest woman out of Jayme. But close after that was seeing Sara, Candoooooooooo, Ali and Shannon. If Sara #2, Lauren, Cecil and my Jo sisters were there, my list of "favorite girls I don't get to see anymore" would have been complete.

Sara, as you may know, is both married to my old roommate Troy, and is also herself my one-time roomie. More importantly, she is responsible for your existence. Her none-too-subtle prodding finally resulted in me asking your mother out on a date. So whenever I see her, I have to give her one of these:

Whenever one of these people gets married...

...we need to pass along the cigar tradition to a new wedding party...

As far as I know, we've only got Marty's wedding remaining.

This letter/blogpost is rated PG-13 for glamorization of smoking.

So congratulations are due to Eric and Jayme. I can honestly say that I've never met a guy as sweet and nice as Eric. And I'm sure Jayme has some good qualities, too.

Drew vs. Table

It was a Guys Night In on Thursday, as your mother pre-celebrated Jayme's wedding with the girls.

You decided to take this opportunity to plow head-first into the coffee table. I immediately grabbed you and hugged you tightly as you began to cry, realizing moments later that I was getting blood all over my shirt.

It was at this point that I really began to panic.

I scrambled through our phone list, frantically trying to figure out if I should call your mom, our pediatrician, 911 or Dr Drew. After about 30 seconds of this, I realized that you had just cut your lip a little bit and were already starting to calm down. So I wiped off your face, gave you some antibiotic and read you a book.

Now some might argue that in the Epic Battle of Drew vs. Table, you were the obvious loser, having been so terrifically bloodied. I, however, would argue that within a few minutes, you were doing fine, while it is the table that will bear the permanent scar...
